WooBall Weekly: Bravehearts set many records, but stumble to a 2-4 week

Monday had the North Shore Navigators visiting Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field looking for their first win of the season, and the Worcester Bravehearts may have taken their winless opponent for granted and came out flat. Unfortunately the Bravehearts were never really in the game.

With Worcester down 5-0 after four and a half, a Kevin Doody RBI single got the Bravehearts on the board. Greg Kocinski added an RBI single in the sixth, and Thomas Walraven had one in the seventh. Worcester would also add a run on an error for the 9-4 final.

On Tuesday the Bravehearts trekked to Portsmouth, New Hampshire to take on Seacoast, and set several team records en route to a 19-2 thrashing of the Mavericks. Kocinski led the way with the first five hit game in franchise history, and Joe Caico‘s two home runs helped him set a new franchise mark of eight RBIs in a game. Bryan Hart also had two homers in the game, while Brett Coffel added a two-run homer.

All in all Worcester pounded out a new franchise single game record 21 hits, while starter Sean Mellen flirted with the team’s single game strikeout mark, finishing just short with 11 in five innings.

You know the kind of game it was when Trevor Johnson goes 3-5 with a double and Nick Santucci gets 3RBI and they barely get a mention.

It was off to Bristol on Wednesday and the Bravehearts jumped out to an early lead after Caico doubled and John Friday roped an RBI single in the top of the second. In the top of the third Kocinski made it a two run lead with a home run.

The Blues got one in the bottom of the third, but a Johnson RBI single in the fifth gave Worcester back its two run lead. Unfortunately in the bottom part of the frame Bristol got a three run homer to take the lead.

In the eighth the Bravehearts got two to retake the lead on a Coffel RBI double and a Mariano Ricciardi RBI single. In the bottom of the ninth it got ugly for Worcester as Bristol scored twice to hand the Bravehearts a 6-5 defeat.

Martha’s Vineyard visited Worcester on Thursday and the Bravehearts again started off quickly behind a first inning RBI single by Kocinski. But that was all the offense Worcester could muster as pitchers from both sides dominated the game in what ended as a 3-1 loss for the home town team. They’d have an extra day to stew over that loss as Friday’s game at North Shore was rained out.

Saturday it was off to visit the FCBL defending champion Nashua Silver Knights for the Bravehearts, and it was again the pitchers dominating the game. Through five innings Worcester was being no-hit, but in the sixth Dante Ricciardi changed that when he led off the sixth with a single. After a sacrifice and some heads up baserunning by D.Ricciardi a Caico RBI single would drive him home.

In the eighth Bryan Hart led off the frame with a single, and with the help of a sacrifice bunt and passed ball Hart would score on a sacrifice fly. Walraven then followed with a home run as the Bravehearts went on to win 3-0.

Starter Billy DeVito got his second win of the season allowing just three hits and striking out six. Last season’s 210Sports Bravehearts MVP Frank Moscatiello returned to action with a two-inning save.

Sunday saw North Shore returning to Worcester, and in a see-saw affair the Bravehearts came out on the wrong end of 11-8 final. The bright spots for Worcester was Walraven tying the franchise mark for doubles in a game with three, and Caico launching his fifth homer of the season. Trevor Jensen went 4-4 with two doubles and 4RBI, while Kocinski added 3RBI.
