WooBall Weekly: Late week stumble knocks Bravehearts down to second place in FCBL

It was a rare Monday game for the Worcester Bravehearts as they visited Holman Stadium in Nashua, New Hampshire to battle the Futures Collegiate Baseball League defending champion Silver Knights, and after losing a five-run lead WooBall was able to get a run in the top of the ninth and hold on for a 6-5 victory.

The Bravehearts opened the scoring in the top of the third on a Kevin Matos sacrifice fly and an Andrew Chronister RBI single. In the fourth a sac fly from Daniel Bucciero and a Marc Willi RBI single made it 4-0. In the fifth an Antonio Morales RBI double made it a five run cushion.

Unfortunately, by the end of the seventh, that lead was gone. In the ninth another Chronister RBI would make it 6-5 Worcester, and Champ Davis pitched a scoreless bottom of the frame for his first save of the season. Toby Sheidt was credited with the win.

With there being only one game the FCBL didn’t announce a player or pitcher of the night, which is too bad for Chronister as he went 4-5 with a double and 2 RBI, including the game winner.

Tuesday it was a trip down south for Worcester as they visited New Britain Stadium to take on the Bees and WooBall never trailed in what would end up being a 6-3 victory. After a scoreless five frames Jack Thorbahn put WooBall on top in the sixth with a three-run moon shot to left center. In the seventh an RBI double by Daniel Bucciero made it 4-0.

The Bees would grab two runs in the seventh, but the Bravehearts would get those back in the ninth on a Tyler Bastunas RBI double and a Bucciero run-scoring single. New Britain would grab an unearned run in the ninth for the 6-3 final. Max LeBlanc picked up his second win of the year, along with the FCBL’s “Pitcher of the Night” award, for his five-inning start where he allowed one run and struck out six.

Highlights/Interviews

On Wednesday the Bravehearts were supposed to play in Brockton, and they did manage to get one batter into the game before the rains came. The game was abandoned at that point and will be restarted from the first pitch at a later date.

Westfield was the visitor Thursday at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field, but one bad inning did the Bravehearts in as they lostto the Starfires 3-2. It was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when WooBall manufactured a run on a Stan Zagrodnik walk, an AJ Guindon single, and a Tyler Bastunas fielder’s choice. Westfield grabbed three runs in the eighth, and all Worcester could counter with was a single run on doubles by Jack Thorbahn and Kevin Matos.

Highlights/Interviews

The Bravehearts hosted new Britain Friday at the HIP, and once again the late innings proved to be an issue as the Bees put up seven runs over the final three frames to hand Worcester a 7-2 loss. WooBall got a run in the third on a new Britain infield error, and another in the seventh on a Tyler Bastunas sacrifice fly.

Clay Robbins once again pitched well, striking out seven in six inning while allowing just two hits and no runs. He was named the FCBL’s “Pitcher of the Night”.

The downpours of Saturday washed out Pittsfield’s visit to the HIP, and on Sunday the Bravehearts wished the game was postponed as they got shellacked at home by the Norwich Sea Unicorns in a 10-0 mercy-shortened seven-inning game. The less said about the game, the better.
