The week for the Worcester Bravehearts began on Tuesday at Dodd Stadium in Norwich for a game against the Sea Unicorns and unfortunately fell behind early and their comeback fell short as they lost 4-2. WooBall’s runs came in the top of the ninth on a Daniel Bucciero solo home run and a Marc Willi sacrifice fly.
It was back to Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field Wednesday for a matchup against Westfield, and the Bravehearts carried a one-run lead late into the game only to see the Starfires score in the eighth and ninth innings to hand WooBall a 3-2 loss. A Tyler Bastunas RBI single in the third frame gave Worcester a 1-0 lead. In the sixth, the clubs exchanged runs, with the Bravehearts taking a 2-1 advantage on a Jack Thorbahn RBI double.
Griffin O’Connor started the game for the Bravehearts and struck out seven in five frames and was named the FCBL’s “Pitcher of the Night”.
Highlights/Interviews
Vermont was the visitor to the HIP Thursday for the first of two between the teams, and it was a see-saw affair that unfortunately didn’t go Worcester’s way in a 7-6 loss. WooBall took a 2-0 lead in the second on a Michael Florides RBI double to left and a Matty Warren single to right.
It was 4-2 Lake Monsters heading into the bottom of the fifth when the Bravehearts took a 5-4 lead on Jack Thorbahn‘s two-run single to right and a Daniel Bucciero sacrifice fly. Vermont would come back to retake the lead, and Florides’ eighth innings RBI single wasn’t enough to put the game in the win column.
Highlights/Interviews
Friday night’s match-up between the clubs started under heavy clouds and the threat of rain, and they made it a couple of innings before the skies opened up. They’ll pick up the game from where it was suspended when Vermont next comes to town on Saturday, August 5th.
Highlights/Interviews
Westfield came back to the HIP on Saturday for a pair of games, and in the opener, one bad inning did the Bravehearts in as they dropped the contest 4-2. WooBall took an early lead on a first-frame RBI single by Jack Thorbahn. In the third Matty Warren scored on a balk, but a four-spot by the Star Fires in the top of the fourth would put WooBall down 4-2. Neither team could push a run across the rest of the game.
Highlights/Interviews
In the nightcap, Worcester earned the split with a 5-1 victory. Starter JT Raab earned the win going five frames, holing the Starfires to a single run while striking out five, and was named the FCBL’s “Pitcher of the Night”. Evan Cornelius earned the save in his two-inning debut with the Bravehearts.
Down a run entering the third a Kobe Stenson RBI single knotted the score 1-1. In the fifth Greg Gorman‘s bases-clearing double made it 4-1, and in the sixth a Matty Warren RBI double made it the 5-1 final.
Pittsfield invaded the HIP Sunday in a game that was a pitching coach’s nightmare, and in the end, it was WooBall that ended up on the wrong end of a 12-11 final. The Suns got two in the top of the first, but Worcester took the lead in the home half on a Jack Thorbahn RBI double and RBI singles from Marc Willi and Vincent Eramo.
It was 9-3 Pittsfield heading to the bottom of the fifth when the Bravehearts put up a five-spot to close the game to one. Back-to-back RBI singles by Matty Warren and AJ Guindon got the ball rolling. After a run on an infield out Tyler Bastunas singled to right to drive in two more runs to make it 9-8. WooBall then tied it in the seventh when Christian Limón scored on a wild pitch.
Pittsfield would put up runs in the eighth and ninth to take a 12-9 lead, and after runs on an infield out and a balk the Bravehearts comeback fell 90 feet short.
