WooBall Weekly: Bravehearts sit at .500 after two weeks of FCBL play

Tuesday was the first of the Worcester Bravehearts’ school day games, and they took on the Futures League Road Warriors, a traveling team that’s taking the spot of the Pittsfield Suns, who have suspended operations while their ballpark is upgraded. The WooBall bullpen might have been dazed by the amazing purple uniforms worn by the Road Warriors as the traveling team scored two late runs to defeat the Bravehearts 3-2.

Max LeFrancois went 3-4 with an RBI, and Evan Remington pitched six innings of one-run ball.

Highlights/Interviews

Wednesday it was off to Brockton for Worcester to face off with the Rox, and it was 9-0 before WooBall could get a run across the plate as Brockton cruised to an 11-3 win over the Bravehearts. Fifth innings singles by CJ Egrie and Max LeFrancois scored runs, while Worcester’s third run came on a seventh-inning infield out.

Aidan Greene was WooBall’s best pitcher of the night, striking out four in two hitless innings, earning the FCBL’s “Pitcher of the Night”.

With heavy rains falling throughout New England Thursday morning New Britain’s visit to Fitton Field to take on WooBall was the only FCBL game not postponed, and after finding themselves down 6-0 after six and a half frames the Bravehearts were probably wishing their game had fallen victim to the rains too. But Worcester dug deep and scored seven runs over the next three innings to walk off with a 7-6 victory.

Nathan Samii began the improbable comeback in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single, and two batters later Michael Brown scored on a wild pitch. Matt Milone followed with a two-run shot to left to make it a four spot in the frame. A Tyler McCord sacrifice fly in the eighth cut the Bees’ lead to 6-5.

In the bottom of the ninth Cody Smith doubled and Joey Rubin advanced him to third with an infield single. Milone then singled in Smith to knot the game 6-6. Two batters later Dylan LaPointe crushed one to left center that the Bees defense just let go as pinch-runner CJ Egrie crossed the plate for WooBall’s first walk-off win in almost a full year.

Owen Pincince, who is listed as an outfielder on the roster, got the win with a scoreless ninth inning pitched. Noah Pins also pitched well out of the bullpen in a hitless inning of relief.

For his 3-5 night with 3 RBI Malone was named the FCBL’s “Player of the Night”.

Highlights/Interviews

The Nashua Silver Knights were Friday’s opponent at Fitton Field, and for the second night in a row the Bravehearts needed some late-inning offense to win as they defeated the Silver Knights 8-3.

After allowing a run in the top of the second inning Worcester took the lead in the home half when Matt Milone doubled, followed by an RBI triple from Owen Pincince. Dylan LaPointe‘s single then scored Pincince.

Batting in the eighth down 3-2 WooBall struck for six runs on just three hits. With Pincince batting the Bravehearts scored two runs on a wild pitch, and then another on an infield error. Tyler McCord followed with a single to drive in two more, and Nathan Samii double scored McCord to make it the 8-3 final.

James Borsari got the win getting the final 5 outs for Worcester, and Brandon Stanley, Vincent Purpura, Joe Curreri, and Josh Fischer all pitched well on the night.

After a rare Saturday night off the Bravehearts closed out the week hosting New Britain on Sunday, and once again WooBall needed some late inning runs to to come out on top 11-8.

Worcester jumped out of the gate early with a two-run single in the bottom of the first by Owen Pincince. The Bees had come back to tie it through four and a half frames, but in the bottom of the fifth the Bravehearts put up three runs to retake the lead, with Cody Smith‘s inside the park homer driving in two. WooBall’s third run came via a wild pitch. In the sixth an RBI on an infield out and a Matt Milone sac fly made it 7-2.

New Britain was able to tie it 7-7 in the eighth, but Worcester took command with a four spot in the home half of the inning. CJ Egrie started it when he tripled and then scored on a wild pitch. Later in the frame Pincince and Dylan LaPointe both laced RBI singles, and then Pincince scored on a wild pitch.

Smith went 3-4 for three RBI and three runs scored in the game and was named the FCBL’s “Player of the Night”.
