WooBall Weekly: Bravehearts hanging tough with .500 week

The Worcester Bravehearts began their week Tuesday morning with another “Baseball in Education game” at Fitton Field, and like the previous week’s school-day game, it was against the FCBL Road Warriors. Unfortunately, the 4,763 in attendance saw WooBall lose another matinee, this time by a 10-3 score.

It was 7-0 Road Warriors before Worcester pushed any runs across the plate. A Matt Milone sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth scored WooBall’s first run, followed by a Dylan LaPointe RBI single. The Bravehearts would score a third run in the frame on an infield out.

Wednesday it was off to Bullens Field in Westfield for another school day game, and after falling behind early the Bravehearts came storming back to take the lead only to stumble at the end in a 10-8 loss to the Starfires.

Down 4-0 in the fourth WooBall got on the board on a two-run double by Nathan Samii, and in the sixth Worcester tied the score on a Jacob Hurrell two-run homer.

In the seventh Owen Pincince made it 6-4 Bravehearts with a two-run double, and Dylan LaPointe tacked on another run with an RBI single. WooBall would score an eighth run on a double play ball to make it 8-4. But Westfield would come back with four runs in the eighth to make it the 10-8 final score.

After a rainout Thursday Worcester was back at it Friday at Fitton Field when they hosted Norwich, and in a ride that was a little bumpier than it needed to be the Bravehearts ultimately came out on top 10-7. In the game, CJ Egrie tied the WooBall franchise record for hits in a game and singles in a game at five, and was named the FCBL’s “Player of the Night”.

Worcester got two runs in the top of the first on a Matt Milone RBI single and a Cody Smith RBI triple. The Sea Unicorns tied it in the next half, but WooBall retook the lead in the bottom of the second with a bases-loaded walk by Joey Rubin, a wild pitch that scored Michael Brown, and RBI singles by Owen Pincince and Smith. Dylan LaPointe‘s two-run homer in the fourth made it an 8-4 game.

Norwich cut that lead to a single run in the top of the seventh, but WooBall grabbed two more in the home half when Egrie’s fifth hit on the night plated Brown and Milone’s RBI single that scored Egrie. Brandon Stanley improved to 2-0 earning the win, with Brady Stuart picking up the save in his Bravehearts debut.

Highlights/Interviews

Saturday night the Road Warriors came to Fitton Field for the third time this young season, and it was the first time this season WooBall was able to defeat the traveling team as Worcester earned a 7-3 victory. The Bravehearts turned aside two early one-run deficits with a second-inning sacrifice fly by Timmy Wagner after Dylan LaPointe tripled and a run on an infield error in the third.

In the fifth WooBall made it 4-2 with another run off a Road Warriors infield error and a LaPointe RBI single. Worcester put it away in the seventh when with the bases loaded CJ Egrie walked, Joey Rubin was hit by a pitch, and Matt Milone walked for the eventual 7-3 final.

Ben Griffith earned the win in relief in his Bravehearts debut. In another team debut, Nick Coniglio struck out four in two scoreless innings.

Sunday saw Nashua coming to Worcester for a twin bill, the first game being a make-up for Thursday’s rainout. The opener was all Silver Knights, who handed the Bravehearts an 11-2 loss. WooBall got some revenge in the nightcap, defeating Nashua 4-2.

In game one Worcester’s two runs came in the bottom of the six when Matt Milone singled in Owen Pincince and Cody Smith.

In game two Milone doubled in Smith in the bottom of the first to open the scoring. In the third Dylan LaPointe‘s RBI single made it 2-0. After a Nashua run in the fourth CJ Egrie doubled to left, stole third, and then scored on the wild throw to third in the fifth. In the sixth Timmy Wagner tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

Josh Fischer earned the win, and Joe Curreri grabbed the save.
