WooBall Weekly: Bravehearts slowly climbing FCBL standings with 3-2 week

It was another “Baseball in Education” day at Fitton Field Tuesday as the Worcester Bravehearts hosted the New Britain Bees, and despite falling behind early the WooBall squad did everything they could to send the screaming school children home happy, and they did just that by scoring nine runs over the final six innings to defeat the Bees 9-4.

Down 4-0 after one Worcester managed to get on the board in the fourth on a Wyatt Hoffman RBI single. The Bravehearts then broke it open in the sixth by putting up seven runs in the inning. Nolan DeAndrade started the onslaught with an RBI double, and then he eventually scored on a Max LeFrancois sacrifice fly.

With the bases loaded WooBall got within one on an infield out as New Britain failed to turn a double play that would have ended the inning. The next batter was Cody Smith, who knocked in two with a single. Matt Milone then launched a two-run shot to cap the scoring in the frame. A Carter Hanson bases-loaded walk to make it the eventual 9-4 final.

Highlights/Interviews

Wednesday was another matinee start for the Bravehearts, this time at Bullens Field in Westfield as Worcester took on the Starfires. It ended up being all about the pitching, and unfortunately, WooBall ended up on the wrong side of a 2-1 score. WooBall’s lone run came in the top of the ninth when Joey Rubin doubled, took third on an infield out, and scored on a Michael Brown sacrifice fly.

Both Nick Harnisch and Carson Walsh pitched well for Worcester in the contest.

It was off to Holman Stadium in Nashua for WooBall for a usual evening start against the Silver Knights, and while Worcester didn’t get many hits in the game they got more than enough runs scored to defeat Nashua 5-1.

WooBall scored three runs in the sixth on just one hit, an Owen Pincince single that made it 3-0. Worcester’s first run came in with CJ Egrie scoring on a wild pitch, and the second was by Joey Rubin on a balk. In the ninth, a Kevin Matos triple scored Wyatt Hoffman, and then Matos scored on Tyler McCord‘s RBI single.

Brady Stuart got the start on the mound, going four innings without allowing a run before giving way to eventual winner Joe Curreri. Ben Griffith got the three-inning save, allowing just an unearned run.

The entire FCBL schedule was rained out on Friday. On Saturday WooBall temporarily renamed themselves “Los Bravos de Worcester” and took on the Vermont Lake Monsters at Fitton Field but the hometown team couldn’t hold a late-inning lead and went down in defeat 5-4.

Down a run after a half inning Los Bravos took the lead with two in the home half when CJ Egrie scored on an infield out and two batters later Matt Milone doubled in Joey Rubin. Egrie’s RBI single in the second made it a 3-1 game. The Lake Monsters got another run in the third, bit in the fourth Egrie scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.

From there Worcester was cruising, until they weren’t as Vermont scored two in the eighth and one on the ninth to win it.

Highlights/Interviews

The two teams met again on Sunday, and this time when WooBall took an early lead they were able to hold on to it as the Bravehearts defeated Vermont 3-1. A two-run homer by CJ Egrie gave Worcester a 2-0 lead in the third, and a Max LeFrancois RBI single in the fourth made it 3-0. The Lake Monsters would cobble together an unearned run in the seventh for the 3-1 final.

Nik Pavia got the start and earned the win, striking out five while allowing just two hits over five innings. Noah McMahon picked up the save going four frames, allowing a single hit while striking out four.
