WooBall Weekly: Bravehearts still chugging along as FCBL heads for the dog days of summer

The Worcester Bravehearts began the week in Nashua against the Silver Knights and needed a comeback and extra innings to earn a 7-6 victory. Down 5-0 after three innings WooBall began their slow comeback with three runs in the fourth.

Dylan LaPointe began the frame with a single and would eventually score on a passed ball after taking third on a wild pitch. Nathan Samii added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2, and the Bravehearts added another run on an infield out. In the seventh Joey Rubin made it a one-run game with a solo homer, and in the eighth, a Tyler McCord RBI single tied it 5-5.

To the tenth inning the teams went, where Worcester would grab two runs on a CJ Egrie RBI double and a wild pitch. Nashua would grab a run to make it interesting, but they could get no closer than the 7-6 final.

Norwich and Worcester played a wild one at Fitton Field on Wednesday, and it saw WooBall tie a franchise record for the largest comeback win after they trailed by seven runs and then scored six runs in an inning twice to defeat the Sea Unicorns 16-13. The Bravehearts took a quick 1-0 lead after one on an Owen Pincince sacrifice fly, but then found themselves down a whopping 8-1 after three frames.

In the fifth Worcester put up their first six-run frame, starting with a Pincince two-run double. WooBall grabbed another run on a wild pitch, and Wyatt Hoffman capped the scoring with a bases-loaded double that scored three. Norwich grabbed three more runs in the top of the sixth, and the Bravehearts scored a run on a throwing error in the home half to make it 11-8 Sea Unicorns.

The teams would exchange two runs each in the seventh, with WooBall’s coming on Joey Rubin‘s bases-loaded walk and Michael Brown scoring on a wild pitch.

In the eighth the Bravehearts put up their second six-run inning, starting with Carter Hanson‘s RBI single. Brown’s singles scored another run, as did CJ Egrie‘s double. Rubin followed with a two-run single, and Nolan DeAndrade‘s sac fly capped the scoring.

Aidan Greene earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief, and Joe Curreri got the save for a three-up, three-down ninth.

Highlights/Interviews

Thursday saw Nashua heading to Fitton Field to take on Worcester, and one poor WooBall half-inning made it interesting but, in the end, the Bravehearts came out on top 8-4 in a contest shortened to seven innings due to rain. Owen Pincince put Worcester on top in the first with an RBI single, and WooBall made it 3-0 in the fourth on a Kevin Matos RBI single and another run on a double play ball.

In the top of the fifth the Silver Knights erased that three-run lead, but when the home half of the frame was over it was another Bravehearts three-run cushion. Shea Grady scored on an infield error, and Joey Rubin added a run on a wild pitch to make it 5-3. Dylan LaPointe‘s sacrifice fly made it 6-3.

Nashua grabbed a run in the seventh, but as the rain began to fall in the bottom of the frame WooBall grabbed two runs when Pincince scored on an error and Timmy Wagner scored on a wild pitch.

John Connolly earned the win in his first Worcester outing, striking out four in two and third while allowing two hits and an unearned run.

Highlights/Interviews

It was back to Nashua Friday night as the Bravehearts and Silver Knights once again matched up, and things were going great for WooBall until the bottom of the ninth when Nashua scored three to Hand Worcester a 5-3 walk-off loss. In the first inning Matt Milone scored on a fielder’s choice, and in the third Shea Grady hit a two-run shot to give the Bravehearts a 3-0 lead. But all the rest of the scoring would be by Nashua.

The Bravehearts made the long trek to Centennial Field in Burlington, Vermont, and showed signs of tired bus legs by falling behind early and then never really being able to make a game of it in a 5-2 loss to the Lake Monsters. Down 5-0 after three, WooBall got on the board in the fourth on a Dylan LaPointe RBI single. Henry DiGiorgio‘s RBI double in the seventh accounted for Worcester’s second run.

Rain caused the Sunday match-up between Vermont and Worcester to be postponed.
