WooBall Weekly: Bravehearts 3-2 week keeps pace with FCBL leaders

The Worcester Bravehearts began the week Tuesday with a trip to Norwich to take on the Sea Unicorns, and after a slow start, WooBall came roaring back only to fall just short in a 7-6 loss. The Bravehearts got on the board down 5-0 entering the eighth when Carter Hanson scored on an infield error and then Jacob Hurrell singled in two more. Timmy Wagner followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4.

Norwich scored twice home half of the frame, and those two runs turned out to be huge as the Braveheart could only get two in the ninth. Shea Grady‘s single and an outfield error scored two, but Grady ended up stranded at second as WooBall’s comeback bid fell short.

Wednesday saw the Westfield Starfires visiting the hip but in the bottom of the third inning heavy rains forced the game to be suspended with the Bravehearts leading 1-0. CJ Egrie had a hit and scored an unearned run in the first frame to give WooBall the lead. The game will be continued at a to-be-determined date.

It was a beautiful night for baseball on Thursday as the Bravehearts hosted Norwich, and it was a see-saw game that ended with two Worcester runs in the bottom of the ninth as WooBall walked off 7-6 winners.

The Bravehearts got on the board first on a Dylan LaPointe two-run double in the first. The Sea Unicorns grabbed a run in the top of the second, but Carter Hanson got the run back in the home half when he scored on a wild pitch. Norwich scored another run in the third, but Worcester answered in the next frame on Jacob Hurrell‘s solo home run.

It was 6-4 Norwich entering the bottom of the eighth when Kevin Matos‘ RBI single cut the deficit to one. In the bottom of the ninth LaPointe’s triple scored Matt Milone to tie the game, and three batters later Hurrell launched a single to left scoring Tyler McCord, who was pinch running for LaPointe.

The FCBL Road Warriors came to town Friday night to take on the Bravehearts, and the night was all about WooBall pitcher Brady Stuart, who got within one out of a no-hitter but had to “settle” for the franchise’s first nine-inning complete-game shutout as he struck out 12 batters in Worcester’s 4-0 win. Stuart has now gone 20 consecutive innings without allowing a run, a new franchise record.

Dylan LaPointe‘s two-run homer in the fourth opened the scoring, and then he launched another in the sixth to make it 4-0. That was more than enough offense for Stuart.

Highlights/Interviews

It was off to Westfield for the Bravehearts Saturday night, and it was not a good night for WooBall as they were defeated 10-2 in a game delayed by rain and then ended early after just five innings. Worcester’s two runs came in the second frame when Jackson Marshall doubled to score a run, and then Jacob Hurrell followed with another double to score Marshall.

Sunday saw the Bravehearts heading back to Fitton Feld to take on the Brockton Rox, and Worcester’s bats did a ton of damage as WooBall defeated the Rox 13-3 in a mercy-shortened seven-inning game. The Bravehearts started their scoring early with a bases-loaded walk by Jackson Marshall and a sac fly from Joey Rubin giving them a 2-00 lead after one frame.

Brocton battled back to tie it in the top of the fifth, but in the home half, Owen Pincince hit a three-run homer to left center to give WooBall their lead back. Later in the inning a Timmy Wagner sacrifice fly made it 6-2. The Rox scored again in the next half, but once again Wooball put up a crooked number in the bottom of the inning.

Dylan LaPointe was the fourth batter of the frame and knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly. Two batters later Shea Grady scored on an infield error, and Kevin Matos followed with a three-run homer of his own. In the seventh Grady scored on a wild pitch, and when Matos walked with the bases loaded that gave Worcester a ten-run lead and a mercy win.

Jordan Gottesman picked up his first win of the FCBL season with seven strikeouts over five innings. Noah McMahon pitched the final two frames.
