WooBall Weekly: Bravehearts still over .500 with one week to go before the All-Star break

After the usual Monday off for the Worcester Bravehearts it was Brockton coming to town Tuesday and early on it was all Rox until WooBall exploded for five runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie it before Worcester would finally succumb 7-6 in a home run derby. The Bravehearts’ first run came in the bottom of the second on a Kevin Matos RBI single.

Down 6-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, Max DAlessandro‘s RBI single began the comeback. WooBall then scored runs on two wild pitches, and an infield error made it 6-5. Shea Grady then laced a double to left to knot the game, but the winning run was gunned down at the plate to send the game to the tenth inning. Neither team scored, and Brockton prevailed in the home run derby 2-1 for the 7-6 win.

Highlights/Interviews

It was off to New Britain Stadium Wednesday as the Bravehearts took on the Bees, and once again the late innings caused WooBall some issues in a 9-5 loss. Worcester got on the board first in the top of the second on RBI singles by Timmy Wagner and Henry DiGiorgio.

New Britain would lead 3-2 entering the sixth when Worcester was able to retake the lead with a three-spot in the frame behind a Kevin Matos two-run homer and an RBI double from Shea Grady. But the Bees would score six runs in their final two at-bats to hand WooBall the loss.

Dodd Stadium in Norwich was the location of Thursday night’s game where Worcester fell behind early but managed to crawl back into the game to tie it in the top of the ninth, only to ultimately 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth. WooBall got on the board in the bottom of the second with runs on an infield error and a Max LeFrancois RBI single. The Sea Unicorns would then answer with six in the bottom of the frame.

The Bravehearts got three of those back in the fourth inning, grabbing a run on an infield out and two runs on Shea Grady‘s double. In the top of the ninth Grady would score the tying run when Dylan LaPointe tripled him in, but in the bottom of the frame, Norwich scored to win 7-6.

Westfield was the visitor Friday night at Fitton Field, and while the Bravehearts only managed six hits they also held the Starfires to a half dozen as WooBall defeated Westfield 6-4.

It was scoreless entering the third when the Bravehearts loaded the bases and then Dylan LaPointe walked forcing in a run. The pitches later Matt Milone crushed one to left center for a grand slam and a 5-0 lead. The Starfires cut that lead to 5-4 after five and a half, but a Kevin Matos RBI single in the six would cap the scoring at 6-4.

Joe Mulhern earned the win with 2.2 innings of relief, and Nick Coniglio earned the save.

Highlights/Interviews

The Starfires returned to Fitton Field on Saturday for the completion of a game suspended by rain in late June and then a previously scheduled game against the Bravehearts. WooBall took the completed game 8-2 but dropped the second contest 7-3.

The early game started in the bottom of the third with the Bravehearts up 1-0 and the bases loaded, and they scored a run on a double play ball to make it 2-0 after three frames. In the fourth a Henry DiGiorgio single scored two, and Owen Pincince followed with an RBI single to make it 5-0. In the fifth Kevin Matos hit a solo homer, and in the seventh, a Dylan LaPointe sac fly scored a seventh run. Worcester’s final run came on a wild pitch.

Nik Pavia earned the win with six innings of relief. Ben Griffith got the original start and pitched three shutout innings.

In the second game, shortened by FCBL rules to seven innings, WooBall scored on an infield error, an infield out, and a Wyatt Hoffman RBI single. Worcester would then allow seven unearned runs on six errors, and that would be the story of the game.

Highlights/Interviews
