The Worcester Railers faced off against the Trois-Rivières Lions Sunday afternoon at Colisée Vidéotron in Quebec, and despite throwing 34 shots on goal they could only connect once, losing 3-1.
The opening period was scoreless, but not without excitement as Kolby Johnson and Morgan Adams-Moisan decided to get together at center ice. This writer gives the edge to Johnson.
This was Johnson’s third ECHL fight of the season. Once a player reaches ten, they get suspended a game, and as the number of fights increases so does the length of suspensions. Johnson may need to become choosier about who he battles with.
The Lions would break the ice in the second period when the Railers failed to clear the puck out of their zone, and with most of the skaters moving off in the wrong direction netminder Henrik Tikkanen was all alone against two attackers, and Logan Nijhoff was able to capitalize at 9:08.
The Railers began the third period on the power play, and Anthony Repaci would even the score with helpers from Matthew Kopperud and Mason Klee.
A late penalty for high sticking against Klee put the Railers 28th ranked penalty killing unit to the test, one that they quickly failed as Nicolas Guay connected 23 seconds later to make it 2-1 Lions. An empty net goal made it the 3-1 final.
GAME NOTES
Scratches for the Railers were Michael Bullion (3-day IR/unknown), Cole Crowder (14-day IR/unknown), JD Dudek (IR/upper body), Colin Jacobs, and Matias Rajaniemi. John Muse was the backup goaltender.
In some ECHL North Division news, word is Reading goaltender Keith Petruzzelli had his mask stolen Saturday night from the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls. It happened at some point just after the Thunder defeated the Royals 4-2, with Petruzzelli taking the loss. There are reports that the perpetrator was seen waving the mask around through a car window while being driven away. Hopefully, the mask will be recovered and those responsible will be held accountable.
The three stars of the game were:
1. TR – 33 Luke Cavallin
2. TR – 9 Nicolas Guay
3. WOR – 39 Henrik Tikkanen
The 210Sports Player of the Game was Anthony Repaci.
