Railers lose 8-1 to Maine

The title says it all. I really have nothing to add other than showing the highlight of Jesse Nurmi’s first North American pro goal.

GAME NOTES
Scratches for the Railers were Anthony Callin (Suspended, game 2 of 4), Kabore Dunn, Thomas Gale (14-day IR/Unknown), Anthony Hora (14-day IR/Unknown), Kolby Johnson (14-day IR/Unknown), Tyler Kobryn, Riley Piercey (Suspended, game 2 of 7), Porter Schachle (14-day IR/Unknown), and TJ Walsh (14-day IR/Upper body). Tristan Lennox started the game as the backup goaltender and entered with 1:20 left in the second period.

Yesterday, the Adirondack Thunder tweeted that Matt Salhany broke their franchise record for the longest timespan between goals. Salhany scored last night in Adirondack’s 4-1 loss to Norfolk, ending a streak of 2,073 days, dating back to March 6, 2020, between goals for the Thunder. Seeing that, of course, we needed to see what the Railers franchise mark is, and it’s 1,425 days between Drew Callin’s goals for Worcester. Before his goal on November 1st this season, his last tally in a Railers jersey was when he scored two against Maine on December 8, 2021. As with many things Worcester pro hockey, Terry Virtue holds the city record for longest duration between goals in the same team’s jersey at 1,756 days. He last scored in his first stint with the IceCats on February 27, 1998, with an empty net goal at Providence, and next lit the lamp in a Worcester jersey on December 18, 2002, during a 4-3 loss to the St. John’s Maple Leafs. The all-time city record comes with an asterisk, as Aston Rome scored his final WorSharks goal on April 13, 2008, vs the Springfield Falcons, and then 3,472 days later scored a goal in the Railers franchise-opening 4-3 win on October 14, 2017.

In the Booster Club post for yesterday’s game story, Teddy King shared a video of the Callin slash. While it was worse than this writer was led to believe, it still falls far short of a four-game suspension, and I’ve seen more violent slashes called minors. But at least we now have something solid to compare to other slashing suspensions.

I had more stuff to add, but I’m guessing not many have made it down this far, so we’ll save them for another time.

The three stars of the game were
1. MNE – #27 Lynden McCallum
2. MNE – #13 Robert Cronin
3. MNE – #1 Brad Arvanitis
