Railers cause Mariners headaches in 4-0 win over Maine

The Worcester Railers and Maine Mariners played in the Railers annual “School Day” game Tuesday morning at the DCU Center, and between the 8,512 screaming school kids and an occasionally misbehaving goal horn pretty much every adult in the building likely left with a splitting headache, but that was nothing compated to the headache Henrik Tikkanen caused the Mariners as he made 30 saves on 30 shots for his second consecutive shutout win.

With the shutout win, Tikkanen ties Mitch Gillam for the franchise record, with six, and also ties Gillam, Dwayne Roloson, and Alex Stalock for second on the Worcester pro hockey record list. Curtis Sanford tops that list with ten.

This writer wasn’t at the game, his headaches being the usual ones he gets at work, and hasn’t watched the video yet, but we know who scored all the goals.

After a scoreless opening period, it took Anthony Callin just 24 seconds of play in the middle frame to make it 1-0 Worcester. Anthony Repaci has the primary assist, and, at least on paper, Cam McDonald has the secondary helper.

A couple of minutes later, the Callins became the first brothers to score a goal in the same game in Worcester pro hockey history when the elder Callin, Drew, scored to make it 2-0. Repaci had the lone assist on the play.

The suddenly hot Lincoln Hatten made it 3-0 at 13:25 of the period with a power play goal, and we clearly see Matt Stief and Riley Ginnell involved with the play, so those points can be inked onto the scoresheet.

With time winding down in the third, Maine pulled Luke Cavallin, and Hatten won the race for the puck as he scored an empty net goal to make it 4-0. Cole Donhauser and Matt DeMelis had the assists.

The two teams will have a rematch on Friday at the DCU Center, with the usual 7pm puck drop.

GAME NOTES
Scratches for the Railers were Thomas Gale (14-day IR/Unknown), Kolby Johnson, Calle Odelius (3-day IR), Riley Piercey (Suspended, game 6 of 7), Porter Schachle (14-day IR/Unknown), and TJ Walsh (14-day IR/Upper body). Tristan Lennox was the backup goaltender.

After some postgame edits to the scoresheet, Henrik Tikkanen has now gone 120 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal, and is the third Worcester pro goalie to register back-to-back shutouts. IceCats goaltender Reinhard Divis was the first to do it, and WorSharks netminder Harri Sateri was the second. Sateri’s streak ended at 159:37, but in one of those math things, to catch Divis Tikkanen will need another shutout and then some. Despite only having two shutouts in a row, Divis went 203:21 without being scored on.

The three stars of the game were
1. WOR – #39 Henrik Tikkanen
2. WOR – #11 Lincoln Hatten
3. WOR – #44 Anthony Callin

The 210Sports Player of the Game was Anthony Repaci.
