It was Superhero Sunday at the DCU Center as the Worcester Railers took on the Greensboro Gargoyles for the second time in 21 hours, and after giving up two one-goal leads Worcester needed some overtime heroics to get the game into the win column, and Anthony Repaci’s bad-angle shot proved to be the game-winner as Worcester defeated Greensboro 3-2.
The game-winning goal was Repaci’s 15th for the Railers, setting a new Worcester pro hockey record.
It was the Railers who opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period on a mini-breakaway by Riley Piercey. Max Dorrington picked up the lone helper with the interception of a clearing bid.
In the second period, with Michael Suda in the box for a hook that was far less egregious than many of the things not called in the game, Colton Leiter made it 1-1 with a shot from the high slot that seemed to fool Henrik Tikkanen.
At 11:04 of the period, after several bids from inside the Gargoyles crease that somehow didn’t go into the net, Matt DeMelis picked up a loose puck from behind netminder Ruslan Khazheyev and pushed it into the yawning net. Matt Stief and Riley Ginnell picked up the assists on the play.
In the third period, old friend Wade Murphy would tie the game for the Gargoyles with a shorthanded goal at 3:53.
The game stayed tied into overtime until Repachi’s record-breaking heroics. Cole Donhauser and Stief got the helpers on the play.
The Railers will begin their post-Thanksgiving schedule in Glens Falls with three games against the Adirondack Thunder, and 210Sports will be on-site all weekend.
GAME NOTES
Scratches for the Railers were Thomas Gale (14-day IR/Unknown), Brendan Dowler, Kolby Johnson (3-day IR), Porter Schachle (14-day IR/Unknown), Tanner Schachle, and TJ Walsh (14-day IR/Upper body). Tristan Lennox was the backup goaltender.
As this was a game the Railers probably should have won in regulation, and the Gargoyles’ tying goal was scored shorthanded, Greensboro is going to gain a plus-1 in our “Trash Points” tabulations. Will the bonus point they earned tonight matter at the end of the season? Well, we’ll find out in April.
On the off chance there’s no clear video of it, I’m going to be a tad vague here, but I do expect that the ECHL Department of Player Safety will be making a phone call to the Railers this week, and a player will be getting a couple of games off for an unpenalized check to the head. If it doesn’t happen, I’ll gladly say what I expected after next Friday’s game. If it does, well, you sort of heard it here first.
The three stars of the game were
1. WOR – #81 Anthony Repaci
2. WOR – #37 Matt DeMelis
3. GSO – #6 Wade Murphy
The 210Sports Player of the Game was Henrik Tikkanen.
