Railers get a hattie, a record, and a brotherly first in 5-2 win over Thunder

GLENS FALLS, NY – Fresh off of stealing a point Friday night in ther 2-1 overtime loss to the Thunder, the Worcester Railers were looking to get back in the win column Saturday at the Harding Mazzotti Arena in the second of three matchups this weekend between the ECHL North Division rivals, and used a Cole Donhauser hat trick, Anthony Repaci’s record breaking points, and the Callin brothers connecting on a goal to defeat Adirondack 5-2.

The only bad news is a potential injury to goaltender Tristan Lennox, who played the first period before leaving with what appears on the game video to be a right leg injury.

Worcester came out of the gate like a team on a mission, and despite being outshot 14-7, played the Thunder fairly evenly, and managed a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes.

The Railers opened the scoring at 5:28 when Donhauser deflected Michael Suda’s hard pass past Adirondack netminder Jeremy Brodeur. Matt DeMelis had the secondary assist.

Jeremy Hanzel’s first of the season tied the score at 9:58, but Repaci’s goal at 16:43, which tied Terry “Mr Icecat” Virtue for most career points in a Worcester jersey at 210, gave the Railers a 2-1 lead. Ryan Miotto and Suda had the helpers.

In the second frame, Parker Gahagen replaced Lennox in goal, and, oddly, just like Friday, the first shot against him lit the lamp when Justin Taylor tied the score 2-2 1:50 into the frame. And also like Friday, it was the last shot to beat the veteran netminder in regulation.

Donhauser grabbed his second of the night at 3:08 to give Worcester the lead for good. Gleb Veremyev and Cam McDonald had the assists.

Drew Callin’s power play goal at 16:29 was a big deal in Worcester hockey history, as when brother Anthony assisted, it marked the first time a brother had assisted on his brother’s goal in a Worcester jersey, and with his secondary assist, Repaci set the city career mark for points with 211.

Railers broadcaster Tim Foley confirmed to this writer postgame that the team, meaning him, had possession of the record-breaking puck.

Despite switching to a more defensive mode, the third period was fairly even, and Donhauser’s empty net unassisted hat trick goal at 17:59 made getting out of the arena a lot easier.

Now guaranteed a .500 trip to Glens Falls for the weekend, the Railers look to grab another point or two Sunday afternoon.

GAME NOTES
Scratches for the Railers were MacAuley Carson, Max Dorrington (suspended, game 2 of 4), Brendan Dowler (3-day IR), Thomas Gale (14-day IR/Unknown), Porter Schachle (14-day IR/Unknown), and TJ Walsh (14-day IR/Upper body). Parker Gahagen was the backup goaltender and entered the game at the start of the second period.

I just wanted to give a shoutout to Railers Creative Services Specialist Ben Schenck for this unbelievably cool graphic celebrating Anthony Repaci breaking Terry Virtue’s Worcester career points record. I had recently given broadcaster Tim Foley a heads-up that it was approaching, and Foley inquired about the top few players on the career list. I dutifully replied, wondering why that might be important. This says it all.

Part of the trip this weekend to Glens Falls for this writer was a family reunion, as my wife and I met up with her late sister’s children for the first time in a very, very long time. After having dinner with them on Friday, they asked if they could join us at the game on Saturday. Thanks to Thunder Director of Group Sales Jeff Casey, who found us two tickets very close to where the Railers fans were sitting in an essentially sold-out arena, for making that happen. It was a good time had by all. And, as I was reminded by my nephews, it was the second time we had brought them to a Worcester hockey game. The first was late in the IceCats’ inaugural 1994-95 season, where they remembered the IceCats winning. So, despite 30 years between games, they’re on a two-game winning streak. That might become important come playoff time.

The three stars of the game were
1. WOR – #27 Cole Donhauser
2. WOR – #81 Anthony Repaci
3. WOR – #18 Michael Suda

The 210Sports Player of the Game was Parker Gahagen.
