Railers feeling gr-eight after big win in Greensboro

The Worcester Railers faced off against the Greensboro Gargoyles Sunday afternoon for the third of their three-in-three series at the First Horizon Coliseum, and it was all Worcester as eight different Railers players scored in an 8-1 thrashing of the Gargoyles. Netminder Parker Gahagen missed a shutout by just 1:22 of play.

A couple of things need to be said before we get to the highlights, the first being that Greensboro goaltender Mason Beaupit, who was making his ECHL debut, had virtually no help out there all day. The 22-year-old Surrey, British Columbia native had no chance with at least eight Gargoyles regulars out of action. The same could be said for Friday and Saturday’s losing netminder, Ruslan Khazheyev. He’s 7-25-4 this season for a really bad team.

A team so bad it had just two even-strength goals all weekend. When your top line is Josh Groll (9 goals), Greg Smith (12 goals), and Zach White (0 goals and just 10 ECHL games over two seasons), odds are you’re going to be in for a long Sunday afternoon. And for Greensboro and their fans, it couldn’t end soon enough.

With no further ado, here are the Railers goals, presented with basically no editorial content unless some is needed.

First period
Carson 6 (DeMelis, Samuelsson), 18:38 (SH).

Second period
Mitton 6 (Suda, Corcoran), 3:13.

Dorrington 6 (Veremyev), 14:31.

Before Dorrington scored, I tweeted that we might have a review when Groll’s shot hit the crossbar behind Gahagen about a minute before the Dorrington goal. Watching live, it looked like it may have been over the goal line. Referee Mitchell Hardy took his time signaling it wasn’t a goal. A second look at the video shows it did not go over the goal line.

McCarthy 5 (Callin, Callin), 15:55 (PP).

As you can tell by the video, Gleb Veremyev thinks this goal is his. But I’m going to tell you, rewatching the stream on FloHockey, I’m not convinced he actually hits the puck, and instead, he hits the pad of Beaupit and forces the puck into the net. And, by rule, that would mean it’s not a goal. Since the goal counted, it probably belongs to McCarthy.

Third period
Repaci 23 (Suda, Callin), 1:46.

Duhart 9 (Carson, Piercey), 2:27.

Kaplan 4 (Donhauser), 3:32.

Samuelsson 1 (McCarthy, Duhart), 6:40.

The goal was the first in the ECHL for Samuelsson since New Year’s Eve 2023, when he played for the Jacksonville IceMen. Chris Jandric, brother of former Railers forward Steve, had the primary assist on that goal.

Worcester closes out the road portion of the 2025-26 schedule Wednesday night in Maine, and they will return to the DCU Center for Saturday and Sunday contests against Adirondack. If Trois-Rivières gets only a single point in their two remaining games and the Railers win out, they will finish in fifth in the North Division. A points tie with the Lions, and Worcester will stay in sixth.

The Railers need a single point to have a .500 points percentage for the season, but with three wins, Worcester will not reach a .500 winning percentage. The Railers have had a .500 winning percentage just once in their eight playing seasons, in 2017-18.

GAME NOTES
Scratches for the Railers were Gabe Blanchard (14-day IR/Upper body), Connor Federkow (14-day IR/Lower body), Riley Ginnell (14-day IR/Lower body), Lincoln Hatten (suspended, game two of three), Anthony Hora (14-day IR/Lower body), Xavier Jean-Louis, Tristan Lennox (Unavailable/Unknown reason), Declan McDonnell (14-day IR/Lower body), and Ryan Miotto (14-day IR/Lower body). Thomas Gale was the backup goaltender.

It’s a known fact that this writer keeps a lot of pretty odd stats, and as Railers Booster Club President Rich Lundin can attest, I have most of them at my fingertips and often times will ask him to pay close attention to where the puck is because I’m going to have my head down searching my online notes for things. So, road games with odd records are much easier and safer for me to look things up. As I passed along to Tim Foley for the broadcast, this weekend was the first time in Railers franchise history that they have won all three games in regulation in a road three-in-three in the same building. But there’s another: Sunday was the first time in Railers franchise history where every skater had at least a plus-1 rating. They’ve had many games where no one was a minus, but they had never had one where everyone was a plus.

It was a surprise to this writer to see Vinny Corcoran listed as being in the lineup. That leg injury he suffered Saturday night obviously isn’t close to as bad as it looked. Based on Nick Tuzzolino’s pregame interview with Tim Foley, it sounds like it was a dehydration issue, but the video sure looks ugly.

The ECHL Department of Player Safety finally got around to suspending Reading’s Mikael Robidoux on Sunday, this time for his major penalty and game misconduct for kneeing Wheeling defender Tristan Thompson at 16:15 of the second period in Saturday night’s game. Because it’s Reading, who have the absolute worst camera angles in the entirety of professional hockey, you can’t see the hit, but Wheeling play-by-play man DJ Abisalih says in his broadcast that the in-house media replay clearly shows a knee-to-knee hit. If only the ECHL had suspended Robidoux for his hit to the head of Cole Donhauser, Thompson would not have gotten injured by Robidoux.

In some Worcester alumni news, on Friday, former WorSharks Ticket Account Executive Jonathan Forsberg was named as the Greensboro Market President, overseeing both the Greensboro Gargoyles and the UPSHOT Greensboro Groove. He spent the past six years with the Bridgeport Islanders, most recently serving as Vice President of Business Operations. Before that, he worked five seasons with the American Hockey League as Director of Team Business Services, and spent two seasons as Senior Director of Sales and Analytics with the Charlotte Checkers.

The three stars of the game were
1. WOR – #74 MacAuley Carson
2. WOR – #17 Dalton Duhart
3. WOR – #14 Adam Samuelsson

The 210Sports Player of the Game is Michael Suda.
