With the NHL’s expansion draft for the Vegas Golden Knights coming up on Wednesday current NHL teams were allowed to protect either seven forwards, three defensemen, and one goaltender, or eight skaters (any combination of forwards and defensemen) and one goaltender.
A certain number of players each team had to leave exposed for the expansion draft had to meet some minimum contractual requirements, which is why some players you’d expect to see protected were left exposed. First and second year professionals and unsigned draft choices are already exempt from being selected by Vegas.
