WooBall Weekly: Time slowly running out on Bravehearts playoff chances

The Worcester Bravehearts came out of the FCBL All-Star break Friday with a game against the visiting Wachusett Dirt Dawgs, and the Bravehearts found themselves down a run after a half inning. After loading the bases in the home half of the frame Worcester tied the game when Joe Caico was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

That RBI was Caico’s 35th of the season, tying him for the team single season record. It was also the eighth time he’s been hit by a pitch, which set a new single season mark. Pat DeMarco then hit a sacrifice fly to give the Bravehearts the lead.

Wachusett would tie the game in the top of the fourth, and that was all the scoring for each squad as the game went to the Home Run Derby. DeMarco hit 10 for Worcester, but it was not enough as the Dirt Dawgs took the Home Run Derby 15-10 and the game 3-2.

Billy DeVito had another good start for Worcester, giving up just two runs–only one was earned–and striking out six in five innings. Cody Laweryson had nine strikeouts in four innings of relief, setting a team mark for strikeouts in a game by a relief pitcher. In the tenth Frankie Moscatiello struck out two of the three batters he faced.

On Saturday it was Brockton visiting the HIP, and once again the Bravehearts found themselves down early after the Rox manufactured a run in the second and launched a two-run blast in the third. Worcester got on the board in the bottom of the third on a Kevin Doody RBI single.

In the seventh inning the Bravehearts batted around, scoring five runs to take control of the game. A Brett Coffel RBI single got Worcester within one, and three batters later the game was tied via a Mariano Ricciardi bases loaded walk.

A Doody sacrifice fly gave the Bravehearts the lead, and then Worcester added a couple runs on RBI singles by Rafael Bournigal and Greg Kocinski. Brockton scored a run in the eighth, but Moscatiello slammed the door shut for his fifth save of the season.

On Sunday Wachusett came to town again, and in less time than it usually takes to sing the National Anthem the Bravehearts were down and out as Worcester allowed six runs in the top of the first en route to an 18-8 loss to the Dirt Dawgs.

Highlights for Worcester was Bournigal going 4-6 with two RBI, Doody going 3-5 and setting the Bravehearts single season mark for singles with 40 so far this season, and infielder Tommy Walraven pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
