With the ECHL finally reaching the end of their regular season it’s time to take a final look at how some former Worcester pro players did among their respective leagues for the 2020-2021 season. For the North American leagues, any player in that league’s top-20 gets listed. For the European leagues, it’s just those in the top-five for the league. Goaltenders only get a mention if they meet their league’s qualifying minimums.
With so few former Worcester players even playing this season, never mind making the listing, there was a moment or two where there was some temptation to list every player and where they placed in their league. Luckily sanity soon returned, so we’ll just go with the usual criteria. As it is we’ve added the FPHL for the first time. It’s possible it may be the only time we look at that league.
All stats are as of the end of each league’s regular season.
In the NHL it’s pretty much all Dallas’ Joe Pavelski who tied for 11th in the league with 25 goals, tied for second in power play goals with 13, and his +22 rating tied him for 18th. Tampa Bay’s Barclay Goodrow sneaks onto the list being tied for 19th in penalty minutes with 52.
For the first time since the beginning of the AHL era in Worcester, there are no current or former players in the league’s top-20 in any statistic. It’s also likely there aren’t any in the top-50, but that would take a deeper dive into the stats than sanity will allow.
In the ECHL, Kansas City’s Brodie Ried returned from Europe to make the listing five times, with his 25 goals and 60 points both tying for ninth, his 35 assists tying for 13th, his seven power play goals tying for 16th, and his six game-winners tying for third. His Mavericks teammate Lane Scheidl also seven power play goals and six game-winners, and adds 24 goals to tie for 15th and 50 points to tie for 19th. Indy’s Nic Pierog also has 24 goals and seven power play goals, and adds two overtime goals to tie for sixth.
To continue in the ECHL, Allen’s Spencer Asuchak ten power play goals ties for third, and Tulsa’s Matt Lane tied for eighth with five game-winners and tied for second with three overtime goals. Wichita’s Evan Buitenhuis is the only goaltender to make the list, with his ECHL leading 2.29 goals-against average and .931 save percentage. His 16 wins tied for seventh in the league.
As we head to the lower levels of North American pro hockey Macon’s Brian Bowen finished fourth in the SPHL with 18 goals and tied for ninth with 30 points. Pensacola‘s Eddie Matsushima tied for seventh with 19 assists. In our first, and maybe only, FPHL entry Carolina’s Tommy Tsicos 13 goals tied for third, 11 assists tied for 16th, and 24 points tied for ninth.
Over in Europe, Trevor Parkes led the DEL in Germany with 23 goals, and his 41 points was good enough for fifth. In the ICEHL in Central Europe Daniel Ciampini‘s 28 goals and 59 points placed him in second in the league. Zack Phillips closes out the listing, with 25 assists tying him for fourth and 42 points placing him in second in Poland.
