Earlier today Worcester Railers Booster Club President Rich Lundin took to Twitter to make a statement on the lack of non-WooSox sports coverage in the Worcester Telegram. Yesterday, 210Sports did the same thing in our story on Wednesday afternoon’s Railers game.
Lundin’s tweets are included below.
1/ The @telegramdotcom has forgotten three of the four largest sports teams in @TweetWorcester . The @RailersHC , @mass_pirates , and @WooBaseball have been completely ignored. Let’s show you the BEST places to get info – especially the Railers. But first, some background.
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
2/ The @telegramdotcom owners have cut, cut, cut. And from a senior management level, are completely out of touch with what readers want, or care about. I tried to bring this up to them (about the Railers at least)
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
3/ Here’s an email I sent to the editors @MikeElfland @mikemcdermott76 @ConceisonJohn
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
4/ "Seasons Greetings,
I would like to express my disappointment and dismay at the lack of coverage for the Worcester Railers. Over the past couple years, there has been a steady decline in coverage. This year has been the worst.
I cannot understand what the issue is."— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
5/ "Even without a reporter present at the games, you still get press releases from the Railers after every game. I don't understand why they cannot be published to the https://t.co/8yEzVt64JR website."
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
6/ " There doesn't seem to be an issue posting other stories (Including sports game recaps – Especially the WooSox) at any time of the day or night."
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
7/ "Since November 15th (one month!), there has been zero mentions of the Railers in the hard-copy or website. But the WooSox – during their off-season, have had six columns published. 11 mentions of the WooSox on your Twitter account @tgsports, and zero for the Railers."
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
8/ "There have been 2 mentions of the WooSox Foundation as well. No mention of the Railers charitable efforts. They just had their annual "Teddy Bear Toss" – and not one mention or pictures. "
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
9/ "The Railers Hockey Club and the Railers Booster Club donated over $5000 in Christmas presents to Friendly House. Not one single mention. And that's a shame because you could have put out the word that an awesome community resource like Friendly House could use more support."
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
10/ "Previously, the Worcester Telegram had and an AHL and ECHL award-winning writer for his stories and sensation game recaps. Now, there are zero game recaps (dating to last year), and as mentioned earlier, no stories since November 15th."
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
11/ "We are used to very detail game recaps, with pre and post game interviews with players and coaches, and great storytelling."
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
12/ "The Telegram has shown they can provide great coverage (previously with hockey, and currently with the WooSox). Honestly, if it weren't for Cliff Rucker and the Railers, there would be no WooSox, no investment into the Canal District, no general buzz about our city."
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
13/ "With the amount of time, effort, community support (4-time winner of the ECHL Community Service Award beating out 27+ organizations yearly),"
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
14/ "and yes – investment/city development that Cliff Rucker and the Railers have put in to our community, they (and us fans) deserve much better from the Worcester Telegram."
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
15/ That's it for the email. NOTE since I sent this email, there has been 2 additional stories about the WooSox. And this isn’t about the WooSox specifically, as they deserve ALL the coverage they get. But this shows how bad this situation is.
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
16/ And as expected, NOBODY from the @telegramdotcom could be bothered to respond. Pitiful.
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
17/ And today we see @worcestermag (or the shell of its former self since the Telegram stripped it of any value) have a story on “What to do New Years Eve” – without a mention that the Railers are playing New Years Eve. Really? Seriously?
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
18/ What fans from all teams want are game recaps, post-game interviews with players and coaches. Community interaction. The Telegram used to put out 2 stories for each game – a game recap with interviews, and also a story on a player, or coach, something community related, etc.
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
19/ Enough about the Telegram (I have spent more time on them than they have spent on the Railers, Bravehearts, and Pirates combined in the past 2 months).
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
20/ Except I will say I do not wish to disparage the current Telegram reporters and photographers – they can only do so much and do as they are instructed. They write great stuff and take great pics.
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
21/ Where to go for Railers coverage? First – follow @210Sports for all your game recaps, stats, and historical info. Comprehensive for all things @RailersHC , @WooBaseball , @WooSox . (If the @mass_pirates let him – he’d cover them too!)
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
22/ Next we have @WooHockeyNews . Great game recaps, and history as well. @masslivesports has also done a great job with game recaps, interviews, etc (I wish they would do more). @thisweekinWoo also reports on the Railers, as does @InThe016 .
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
23/ @CommonTalkPod @100FMthePIKE and @NashIcon989 have great interviews of Railers players, coaches, staff, and whats going on in the community.
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
24/ @SpecNews1Worc has great features on the Railers on the ice and in the community
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
25/ For great pictures, follow @RLIMAGES and @Keith_Katsoulis
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
26/ Also @EyeAudioRadio for captioned radio, described visual elements.
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
27/ In summary, the 2nd largest city in New England's largest media player has failed the community, fans of all @TweetWorcester teams, the huge business partners and sponsors such as the @DCUCenter, and all other @chamberworc businesses supporting these teams.
— Worcester Railers Booster Club (@RailersBC) December 29, 2022
28/28 Shame on the @telegramdotcom . We ALL need to take it on ourselves to promote them, and get the word out on all the great things they all do – for fans, and especially the community.
