WooBall Weekly: Bravehearts struggle during post-Fourth week

After a scheduled off day on Monday and a rainstorm that postponed the entire Futures League schedule on Tuesday, the Bravehearts visited the Lowell Spinners on Wednesday and would have probably preferred to have that night off too as they could get nothing done at LeLacheur Park and lost 8-2.

Both of Worcester’s runs came in the sixth, the first on a passed ball and the second on Brayden Cali‘s sacrifice fly. Liam Childs was WooBall’s best pitcher of the night, retiring all four batters he faced.

Things got worse on Thursday as the Bravehearts went south to Dodd Stadium for a pair against Norwich and then promptly got swept, losing the afternoon contest 8-3 before falling in the nightcap 7-4.

The Bravehearts had a brief lead in the open on Talen Rosborough‘s second-inning RBI double, but were down 4-1 before John Ramsey‘s fourth-frame RBI single. Ramsey’s sacrifice fly in the sixth accounted for their third run of the game.

They were never really in the second game, down 5-0 before Andrew Schmit‘s RBI single stopped the bleeding in the third. In the sixth, WooBall got two runs on some terrible Sea Unicorn defense, and a third on James Anastasopoulos‘s RBI Single.

It wasn’t any different on Friday when Norwich came up to Fitton Field, and even though the Bravehearts took a quick lead, the Sea Unicorns were able to hand Worcester another defeat when the tying run was thrown out at the plate in a 5-4 Bravehearts loss.

WooBall opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a Jake Yang home run, and later in the frame, Benny Hess was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run. It was 5-2 in the ninth when Aaron Bock doubled to score two, but Bock was out at the plate by mere inches on Yang’s single to left, and that was another in the loss column. Luke Martinez pitched the final three frames, not allowing a run while striking out four.

Saturday night, it was off to New Britain for an encounter against the Bees, where, unfortunately, the Bravehearts could only collect two hits in a 3-1 loss. Worcester’s lone run came in the fourth when Chris Mondesir stole third and scored on an error. Hunter St. Denis and Brayden Cali had WooBall’s hits in the game.
