After the Futures League All-Star break, which saw Lane Leclair winning “Best pitcher” for Wednesday’s game, the Bravehearts hosted Westfield Thursday morning in Worcester’s annual “Camp Day” game, and after starting the game on fire, WooBall suddenly crashed and burned, allowing ten runs in the middle innings to lose 10-7.
Worcester took a 2-0 lead in the third on a Chris Mondesir RBI single and a Hunter St. Denis sacrifice fly. Aaron Bock‘s two-run shot to center made it 4-0 after four.
The Starfires then cut it to 4-3 in the fifth, but the Bravehearts grabbed three runs in the home half on a wild pitch and a two-run single from Joey Benoit. But the wheels came off after that, and it was all Westfield the rest of the way.
The Vermont Lake Monsters, who are running away from the rest of the clubs in the FCBL standings, were the visitors to Fitton Field Friday for the first of two in a row against the Bravehearts, and in the opener Worcester took control in the middle innings and then held on for an 8-5 victory.
A Jeylem Sepulveda sacrifice fly gave WooBall a quick 1-0 lead after one. Down 2-1 in the fifth, Hunter St. Denis had Worcester’s second sac fly of the game, and Brayden Lewis gave the Bravehearts a 3-2 lead with an RBI single.
It was 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth when WooBall broke it open, starting with Jake Yang‘s sacrifice fly. St. Denis and Sepulveda added RBI singles, and Brayden Lewis tacked on an RBI double. In the seventh, Cade Centracchio homered to make it 8-3. Vermont would grab two in the ninth for the 8-5 final. Gavin Price picked up the win.
Game two was on Saturday, and WooBall scored six runs in the opening frame and never looked back in a 15-5 mercy win over the Lake Monsters. Keegan Antelman returned for his third season with the Bravehearts to pick up the win in relief.
Brayden Lewis started the scoring in the first with an RBI single. Two batters later, Jack Murray doubled to score two more. And again, two batters later, Jacob Malfant had a two-run single to make it 5-0. Jake Yang followed later in the frame with the painful RBI by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Cade Centracchio continued the scoring in the second with an RBI single, and in the third Hunter St. Denis doubled in a run and then scored on Jeylem Sepulveda‘s two-run shot to deep left. Worcester added single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth on two infield groundouts and a wild pitch.
In the seventh, WooBall grabbed a run on another wild pitch, and walked it off with the ten-run lead after Malfant’s bases-loaded single made it 15-5 and a sweep of the two-game series.
Worcester closed out the week hosting Nashua on Sunday, and despite allowing seven runs in the sixth inning, the Bravehearts were still able to put the game in the win column by scoring the final ten runs of the contest in an amazing 14-10 come-from-behind win.
Down 1-0 in the third, WooBall took the lead with RBI singles from Jake Yang, Jeylem Sepulveda, and Aaron Bock. Jacob Malfant‘s RBI single in the fourth made it 4-2, and then the Silver Knights scored the next eight runs of the game to take a 10-4 lead after five and a half frames.
The comeback began in the bottom of the sixth, starting with Brayden Cali‘s RBI single. Malfant followed with a two-run shot to left. Sepulveda later added a sacrifice fly to make it 10-8.
In the seventh, Cali continued the comeback with a two-run single to tie it 10-10. WooBall then took the lead on a Jake Yang single and some Bad News Bears defense from Nashua. Hunter St. Denis capped the comeback with a two-run homer to left and the eventual 14-10 victory. Luke Waldeck picked up the win in relief, with Lane Leclair adding two scoreless frames to end the game.
