2001 3-3 exhibition tie at Hartford (Champions Ice, Cromwell, CT)
(ICECATS) Daniel Tkaczuk figured in all three Worcester goals as the IceCats battled the Hartford Wolf Pack to a 3-3 tie in the opening exhibition game for both teams. Tkaczuk assisted on the first Worcester goal by Brett Scheffelmaier in the second period. He scored one of his own in the third, and then assisted on Tyler Rennette’s game-tying goal with 1:06 to play. The IceCats can take a few positives from the opener. Marc Brown, coming off an injury-plagued season, assisted on Scheffelmaier’s and Tkaczuk’s goals. Curtis Sanford played a strong 35 minutes in goal, stopping 17 of 18 shots and allowing only a power-play goal. The IceCats dominated the first period but trailed, 1-0, at its conclusion. Colin Forbes scored a shorthanded goal for Hartford off a feed from Sean Haggerty seven seconds before the break. For the period, Worcester outshot the Wolf Pack, 18-8, and suffered only seven penalty minutes to Hartford’s 16. The Wolf Pack went up, 2-0, at 8:51 of the second period on a goal by Matt Kinzh. Worcester got some relief when Hartford lifted Vitali Yeremeyev from goal in favor of Bryce Wandler. Yeremeyev stopped all 21 shots the IceCats fired at him. Wandler stopped 20 of 23. Scheffelmaier squeezed a feed from Brown past Wandler 15 minutes into the second period to pull the IceCats within 2-1. Tkaczuk answered for Hartford at 8:55 of the third. Hartford’s Chris St. Croix reclaimed the lead at 15:14 of the third before Rennette capped the scoring with 1:06 left. For the game, the IceCats outshot the Wolf Pack, 44-34. Worcester squandered each of its six power play chances, giving up a shorthanded goal during one of them. Hartford was 1 for 5 with the man advantage.
