After an off day on Monday, it was off to Burlington, Vermont, where Worcester took on the Lake Monsters in the first of two in a row at Centennial Field, and while the Bravehearts came out quickly, Vermont scored the final five runs in the game to hand WooBall a 5-2 loss.
Worcester’s runs came in the second inning when Tate Bannish singled and was driven home by Andre Arthur‘s two-run shot to left. The Lake Monsters would tie it with single runs in the third and fourth, and took the lead with a run in the seventh.
Game two was on Wednesday night, or, perhaps more correctly, the start of game two was on Wednesday as rain interrupted the Bravehearts and Lake Monsters in the bottom of the second inning with the score 0-0. There’s been no word of when the game will be picked up, but a good guess might be July 4th when WooBall was scheduled to visit Centennial Field next.
Thursday, it was south to New Britain Stadium for WooBall to take on the Bees, where Erik Swenson, Gavin Price, and Mitchell Hwang combined for a two-hit shutout in Worcester’s 6-0 blanking of New Britain.
The Bravehearts would get all the runs they needed in the top of the first on Tate Bannish‘s RBI single to right and a Cole Travers sacrifice fly. They’d get two more in the sixth on some Little League defense by the Bees, and two in the ninth on sacrifice flies by Gabe Malaret and Travers.
Nashua was Friday night’s opponent at Fitton Field for the Bravehearts, and it was a wild one in Worcester with each team losing multiple-run leads before the Bravehearts walked it off in the bottom of the ninth to win 9-8.
Down 4-0 in the third, WooBall came roaring back, getting their first run on a Gabe Malaret bases-loaded walk. A Tate Bannish RBI single and an error scored two, and WooBall got two more on Hunter St. Denis‘ double. Cole Travers‘ RBI single capped the scoring in the frame. Bannish, who was later named FCBL “Player of the Night”, added a two-run single in the fourth to make it 8-4 Bravehearts.
But the Silver Knights weren’t done, and staged a comeback of their own with three in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it 8-8. It stayed that way to the bottom of the ninth when Jordan Luna walked, stole second, advanced to third on an Alan Carpenter sacrifice, and then scored on a wild pitch.
Lane Leclair earned the win, finishing the game with two scoreless frames. Greg Strite had a scoreless seventh frame for WooBall.
Saturday night saw the same matchup at Fitton Field, and once again the bats were hot for both teams as the Bravehearts and Silver Knights combined for 32 hits and 26 runs, with Worcester finally winning on a slow pitch-like score of 14-12.
WooBall started the scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Will Kraemer and an Alan Carpenter RBI single. After Nashua tied it in the next half-frame, Kraemer gave WooBall its lead back with an RBI hit, and Mason Bordelon added an RBI single to make it 4-2.
The Silver Knights grabbed a run in the third, but Worcester appeared to break the game open with five in the bottom of the inning. Jordan Luna opened the scoring in the frame with an RBI single, Bordelon later walked with the bases loaded, Julian Mercado‘s single scored two, and Carpenter capped the scoring with an RBI single to make it 9-3.
But Nashua would grab five runs of their own in their next at-bat, and it was a ballgame once again. In the fifth, a Mercado two-run homer and a Cade Centracchio two-run triple gave Worcester some breathing room once again, as did an eighth-inning Carpenter RBI single, and it was needed as the Silver Nights would make it interesting with two runs each in the eighth and ninth for the eventual 14-12 final.
Zach Duke earned the win, not allowing an earned run over two innings. Post-game, Carpenter was named FCBL “Player of the Night”.
Lowell came to town on Sunday to close the week, and it was a back-and-forth affair, and unfortunately at the end the Bravehearts were on the wrong side of a 12-9 final.
Down 2-0 after one, Worcester evened it with an RBI double by Gabe Malaret and a run on a failed double-play attempt by the Spinners. It was 5-2 in the fifth when WooBall scored runs on an infield out and a wild pitch. The Bravehearts took the lead in the sixth on a three-run blast by Dante Ruby, but Lowell retook the lead and piled on the runs. In the bottom of the ninth, Worcester made it a game on a Will Kraemer RBI single and a run-scoring triple by Gill Dolan, but that was as close as they’d get.
